Differences Between Nebraska Marriage Records and Foreign Marriage Records
When you live in the United States and are trying to create your family tree, there are many resources available for you to use to further your research. You'll most likely implement programs specially designed to assist in accessing public records, and you'll quickly learn to distinguish the types of information found on the different types of records. One of the most glaring differences you'll notice is how marriage records from a hundred years ago look different than Nebraska marriage records from today, as well as how foreign marriage records also look different.
Foreign Marriage Records
One common ingredient in today's family tree building in the United States is the realization that sooner or later you will encounter ancestors who originally lived overseas. Our culture has been created and filled with people born in other societies and who moved to the United States for a variety of reasons. This means that, once you start doing any research, you'll likely find that you'll have to search other countries' records, such as France's or England's. In doing so, you'll see that there are major differences in the construction of foreign marriage records as compared to ours.
Canadian or French marriage records may prove difficult because, for a very long time, the only records that were kept were church records. Births, deaths, and marriages were all recorded in the church register only. That is where you would have to look for information about relatives living in those locales over a hundred years ago. The mere thought of perusing thousands of names written in script looking for variations of one name can seem a daunting task.
Almost every country has its own little quirks in their official documents, especially when it comes to marriage records. English-speaking countries may not seem as intimidating as those that do not speak English. How do you translate these types of records? The best way is to get some help. While most online programs will give you the basic gist of what the record is saying, often they won't say exactly what the record states, so you may want to invest some money in getting your foreign marriage records translated by a professional.
It's much easier to figure out what a Nebraskan marriage record says as opposed to a foreign marriage record, but if your family immigrated from another country, no matter how long ago it was, you'll have to do some searching through foreign records at some point in order to get the information that you want. This task can be tricky, but learning which culture your family is from, and getting a glimpse into that past, can be well worth the extra time, or any extra expense, that you may have to take on.
